The
Martins Ferry Public Library's bookmobile provides daily
service to villages, schools, nursing homes and other institutions
throughout Belmont county. Since 1938, the library has operated
eight increasingly sophisticated vehicles, beginning in
1938 with a small panel truck with upward-hinged exterior
doors (below, from a newspaper clipping). The newest vehicle
(right), a 1992 Ohio Bus/Blue Bird, has a cellular telephone,
computer and lots of material besides books.
Bookmobile service is free and available to anyone in
Belmont County and surrounding communities. Each of the
35 stops is visited bi-weekly, and material may be borrowed
for two or four weeks. You can pick up a schedule by calling
the Martins Ferry Public Library at 740-633-0314, or by
stopping at any of the five branch
libraries.

This 1938 panel truck served as the first 'Bonnie Belmont'
bookmobile in Belmont County. The truck could only be used in good weather as it was
equipped with outside shelving. |
