I am primarily an oil painter. I have been painting for over 20 years, although I spent the better part of the 90's working in the medium of video. I resumed painting in 2000 because video art was becoming too expensive. I liked the simplicity of painting and how the medium has basically remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Video, on the other hand, and the technology required to make video art, changes all the time. |
| I paint in the impressionistic style. A few people have said that my style is photo-realistic because the finished paintings look very much like the photos they came from. Photo-realistic work is far more detailed-oriented than mine. I like to suggest details rather than paint them all.
Most of my favorite artists are the moderns, that is to say, artists from around the mid-nineteenth century to today, but I like almost everything. Some particular favorites are Vermeer, Monet, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, Pollack, Klein, and Warhol. Some of my favorite artists working today are Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Bruce Nauman, Nicky Nodjoumi, and David Lynch.
My goal is to paint something that I haven't seen before; something really new that stays with you long after you've seen it. Those are the best paintings. I don't know if I've accomplished that yet, but I'm still trying.
